The Haunted Mansion.

A series of art dedicated to the famous Disney attraction, possibly the greatest haunted house of all time.

                                                                 "this ghostly retreat".

"this ghostly retreat 2"

"this ghostly retreat 3"

                                                                   "stretch paintings".

"stretch paintings 2"---the bright green line in the black field on the far left indicates the "bottom" of the portrait before the gallery stretches to its full length.

                                                                     "bride wars".

"dark hitchhikers"---an Edward Gorey-esque take on the famous trio.

                                                                   "dead Constance".

"happy haunted holidays"---I made this one big, having it in mind as a screensaver.

"HM grindhouse style"---as in grindhouse movie.

"graveyard jamboree"
Inspired by the historically diverse otherworldly musicians
in the Mansion's graveyard.

"the boot hill broken jug band"---similar to the one above, except inspired by Phantom Manor, the mansion's European cousin.

"we follow you home"---another version of the hitchhikers, using a photo I took as a backdrop.

"what perry white says"---I've contributed art to a Haunted Mansion-themed page on DeviantArt;this past year, they asked for depictions of thirteen particular ghosts in the mansion.I chose to do this one.

"only ghost stories,of course"---combining my HM fascination with another of my obsessions, the classic EC comics.

A couple of years ago, inspired by the Haunted Mansion Holiday and Phantom Manor,I came up with the Doomed Adventurers' Club,a re-interpretation of the mansion if it were relocated to Adventureland---you visit the abandoned remains of an elite 19th-century hunting club, somewhere in deepest Africa, that fell under an old voodoo woman's curse,in response to all the animals that fell at the hunter's hands---lacking the facilities,or the money,or anything that would actually allow me to build it,I wrote out a scene-by-scene description of the place{which you can read at deviantart.com; it can be found in my Haunted Mansion-themed gallery}.As you can see,I also created an attraction poster, like the kind you'd find at the parks.

In 1974,a company called MPC released four ready-to-assemble-and-paint
model kits based on the Mansion. Each had an added feature,a very brief bit
of rubber-band-powered animation dubbed zap / action. The picture above,
"the vampire's midnight madness" is based on one of these assembled kits.

Here's another..."grave robber's reward".

Here's the third,"escape from the crypt".

And last, but by no means least,is "play it again, sam".

                                                                      "restless bones"

                                                                  "graveyard shift"

"mickey's initiation"

"haunted liquor label"--before learning about Photobucket and DeviantArt,I used to post several pieces of Haunted-Mansion-inspired art on the discussion pages of doombuggies.com.Several were of a series--in fact,I believe some of them may still be there--inspired by the Imagineer-created liquor labels pasted on bottles for the saloon in Phantom Manor's ghost town scene. While I'm not planning to re-create every single one I did, this is a revision of one of my personal favorites.
However,if you look in "the boot hill broken jug band" posted above, you will see in the details miniature versions of two other labels I did,one featuring an image of the Hatbox Ghost, the other a Jack Sparrow-themed liquor.

"the air is deathly still"---years ago,I remember seeing "The Portrait Of Dorian Grey"...I don't remember which version, but I know CGI effects did not yet exist...in which the infamous painting didn't just age,it melted,as if the various depictions of Grey throughout his life had been painted on top of each other, and the younger versions of him were melting away first. It was a fantastic effect..in fact,I think that's all I remember from the movie...and it inspired this reimagining of the WDW Mansion's  famous portrait.

"mad as a hatbox"---a Disney mashup,if you will.

How was he to know that his last unbirthday would be just that!

"after the ball is over"...created for a HM-themed contest on DeviantArt,you had
to create a monochromatic depiction of ballroom dancers, including physical
evidence of the cause of death.

"the ghost host and mr. chicken"

"lillian undraped"

"unwelcome foolish mortals"

"stupid mortal questions"

"grim grinning spirits"
Just a little something for the holiday season...

"the necromancer"
A turn-of-the-century style poster for
the Mansion's signature medium!

"great dead hunter"
This is based on an unrealized idea from Marc Davis, one of the
original Disney artists,as well as one of the main contributors to
the Mansion's interior design.

"it's been far too long"
Created to commemorate the "return" of the legendary Hatbox Ghost
to the Disneyland Mansion.

"happy haunts motorized"

"wall-to-wall creeps"
The Mansion's famous "bat's-eyes" wallpaper inspired me
to create something similar. Note:this is a very large image!

"grim grinning poker"

"from box to pail"

"practice your terror"
Just imagining what a Haunted Mansion
Colorforms set might look like.

"wherever candlelights flicker"

"singing shrunken heads"

An imagined detail from the Doomed Adventurers' Club,a re-imagining of
the Mansion relocated to Adventureland.
For further details, see the attraction poster further up this page.

"delightfully unlivable"

"the haunted holy grail"

When the original Mansion opened at Disneyland in 1969,there was a specter in
the attic scene which has become known as "the hatbox ghost".Its stay in the attraction
was short-lived,as it was removed shortly after the ride opened, largely due to the
visual effect it involved not working as well as it was hoped. Although the removal was
never announced to the public, there were those who remembered it,and over time, fans
of the ride wondered what had become of it.
No doubt many believed the figure still existed, spending its days anonymously packed away
in some forgotten corner of some obscure warehouse owned by the Disney company;that
supposed scenario inspired this piece.
Those who've researched this topic have discovered that,in all likelihood, the Hatbox
Ghost no longer exists,at least not in its original form. The figure has probably since
been stripped for parts to use in other Disney attractions. In 2015,the Hatbox Ghost
returned to the Disneyland Mansion, albeit in a new animatronic with an improved
version of the visual effect that it was originally created for.

"tales from the mansion"

"call in the spirits, wherever they're at!"

"funny book"

"a half century of haunts"

On August 9,2019,the original Haunted Mansion at Disneyland
celebrated its 50th birthday.

"swingin' in '69"

Inspired by the fact that the Mansion follows the haunted-house
archetype of a pre-20th century manor house,it still contains one
element to its conception and opening in the late 1960s......
the phrase "a swinging wake",heard in both the Ghost Host's
omnipresent narration and its iconic song.

"they followed you home"

"how the departed have fun"

"after they put Jack on Pirates"
